A train takes 8 seconds to reach a telegraph pole and 16 seconds to cross a pole 264 meters long. What is the length of the train?

  1. 280M
  2. 276m
  3. 264m
  4. 258m

Let the length of the train be ‘x’ meters and it's the speed by y m/s

➨ Distance = Speed × time

➨ time = distance/speed

➨ x/y = 8

➨ y = x/8 ----(i)

Also,

➨ x+264/y = 16

➨ x+264 = 16y -----(ii)

Put the value of y from equation (i) to (ii)

➨ x+264 = 16 × x/8

➨ 8(x+264) = 16x

➨ 8x + 2112 = 16x

➨ 8x = 2112

➨ x = 2112/8

➨ x = 264
